Father Flanagan: "The poor, innocent, unfortunate little children belong to us, and it is our problem to give them every chance to develop into good men and good women."
Making Christmas extra special for the kids all started with our founder, Father Edward Flanagan, who opened the doors to his first home for boys just two weeks before Christmas in 1917. Recognizing that many of the boys had never had a true Christmas, he made sure that they decorated a tree, sang Christmas carols and each received a gift.
What has changed, of course, is what it costs to take care of a child... to clothe, feed and educate them, and more importantly, to show them the anguish (both physical and mental) they have suffered doesn’t have to haunt them forever.
We can show these children, who have been abused, abandoned or neglected, that somebody truly cares what happens to them...that there is warmth and love in this world.
